How to Remove a Video Background with AI

A practical video background removal workflow: prepare a short clip, select your subject, inspect moving edges, and check a transparent WebM export.

Removing a video background means separating the subject from its surroundings across a sequence of frames. The useful result is a reusable subject, not simply a video with a different solid color behind it. A presenter can sit over slides; a product can appear over a brand background.

CutoutFox’s first MVP is focused on image and video background removal. This guide covers the video workflow. Selected-object removal and audio noise reduction are separate, planned tools.

1. Start with a representative short clip

Choose a continuous shot that includes the movement you actually need. If the full recording is an interview, use a section where the speaker turns their head or gestures. A still opening frame is not enough to judge a moving cutout.

The current video workflow accepts MP4, MOV, and WebM files up to 1 GB, with a maximum processed clip of five minutes. Check the controls in the live tool before uploading: supported files and service availability can change. Keep a copy of the original recording.

2. Choose the subject and audio you want to keep

Open the video workspace, select your source, and sign in when prompted. Set the start and end of the clip. Choose the people or objects mode that matches the main subject, and decide whether to retain the original audio.

“Objects” here describes the foreground subject to keep. It does not mean clicking an unwanted dog, stone, or product and erasing it while preserving the scene. Read the background removal versus object removal guide for that distinction.

3. Review movement, not just the thumbnail

After processing, compare the source and result. Inspect several points in the clip:

  • Hair and loose clothing when the subject moves.
  • Fingers, handles, and other narrow shapes.
  • A moment when the subject overlaps a similar-colored background.
  • The beginning and end of the selected section.

Use a light and a dark background to expose different edge problems. A transparent preview checkerboard is a display aid; it should not be baked into the exported footage. If an important detail disappears, try a clearer source shot rather than assuming a longer rerun will recover it.

4. Check the export in its destination

The current Standard workflow produces transparent WebM output up to 720p. It is not a promise of original-resolution or 4K delivery. Download access depends on your account’s purchase entitlement; a preview and a downloadable file are different things.

Import the result into the application where you will use it and place another layer beneath it. Confirm that the receiving application supports the file’s codec and alpha channel. A black player window alone does not prove that transparency has been lost; use the black-background checklist.

Before you process the next clip

Use the first result to choose better framing and lighting for the next recording. The goal is a clean subject that works in your final composition, not an impressive isolated preview that fails after import.
